The 海角乱伦社区 (UDS) will hold its 20th Inaugural Lecture on Friday, June 27, 2025, at the Dr. Andani Andan Academic Board Chamber on the Tamale Campus, beginning at 2:00 p.m. The lecture will be delivered by Professor Weseh Addah, a renowned academic and Director of the Directorate of Community Relations and Outreach Programmes (DCROP) at UDS.
The lecture, themed “Appropriate Technologies in the Conservation and Utilization of Crop Residues: A Panacea to the Influx of Live Ruminants from Sahel States into Ghana,” is expected to spark critical national conversations on sustainable livestock production, food security, and agricultural innovation in Ghana.
Speaking ahead of the lecture, Prof. Addah explained that Ghana’s continued dependence on live ruminant imports from Sahelian countries like Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali presents significant risks to food security, public health, and the national economy. “The solution lies in the smart use of what we already produce but often waste, our crop residues,” he said. “With the right conservation and feeding technologies, we can transform these residues into quality livestock feed that empowers our local farmers and reduces Ghana’s dependence on external sources for meat.”
Prof. Addah’s inaugural lecture will delve into research findings accumulated over more than two decades of work in ruminant nutrition. He will outline how innovations in the storage and processing of crop residues such as maize stover, rice straw, and groundnut haulms can significantly improve livestock productivity in Ghana. According to him, these technologies can be adopted even in resource-poor farming communities, making them scalable and transformative.
“In many rural areas, particularly in northern Ghana, we watch valuable biomass go to waste every harvest season. Yet, these same communities import goats and cattle to meet their protein needs,” Prof. Addah observed. “This paradox must end. The science exists, and the time to act is now.”
The Vice-Chancellor of UDS, Prof. Seidu Al-Hassan, described the upcoming lecture as timely and deeply aligned with UDS’s mission of practical, pro-poor, and community-centered scholarship. “Prof. Addah’s research is a shining example of knowledge that responds to local challenges with global implications. His lecture promises to contribute meaningfully to national policy direction in agriculture and food security,” he said.
The 20th Inaugural Lecture is also a significant academic milestone, marking the recognition of Prof. Addah’s distinguished career as a scholar, educator, and administrator.
