“Bring Us the Trophy”: Vice-Chancellor Rallies Team Ahead of Universities World Cup in China

Excitement is running high at the (UDS) as its Football team prepares to represent Ghana at the upcoming Universities World Cup in China. On Monday, September 1, 2025, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Seidu Al-hassan, gave the players a rousing send-off that blended pride, humor, and unwavering support.

Welcoming the athletes to the Council Chamber, Professor Al-hassan congratulated them on their recent triumph in Nigeria, a hard-fought victory that secured their place on the global stage.

“You have lifted the name of and Ghana high,” he said with a smile. “Now, as you head to China, we expect you to stay disciplined, focused, and determined. Remember, you carry with you not just the hopes of this University, but of the entire nation.”

In a light-hearted moment, the Vice-Chancellor playfully asked what the University should expect in return for its support. The room erupted in laughter when the athletes confidently replied: “We’ll bring the trophy home!”

Visibly encouraged by their bold assurance, Professor Al-hassan praised the team’s resilience and teamwork, commending the Sports Directorate for grooming athletes who are now global contenders. “You are ambassadors of and of Ghana. Go with courage and return with victory,” he urged.

The Sports Director, Mr. Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, expressed gratitude for the groundswell of support from individuals and institutions who have rallied behind the team. Among the notable contributions are:

  1. Two sets of training kits from Hon. Abass Ridwan, former MP for Sissala East
  2. Two sets of jerseys from UTAG-UDS
  3. Assorted drinks from Real Tamale United (RTU)
  4. Track suits from the Ghana Football Association (GFA)
  5. A transport support of GHS 70,000.00 from WACWISA
  6. GHS 5,000.00 from Alumni Association
  7. Prayers and words of encouragement from the Tolon Chief, Naa (Rtd) Major Sulemana Abubakari

With these resources and a wave of goodwill behind them, the team is heading into the World Cup with confidence and determination. The University community, standing solidly in support, believes their champions will shine on the international stage and make both and Ghana proud.
