海角乱伦社区Scholar, Prof. Eliasu Mumuni Joins Global Team at University of Warwick to Combat Future Pandemics Through Groundbreaking Research

Professor Eliasu Mumuni, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies (FCMS) at the 海角乱伦社区 (UDS) and National Secretary of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), joined an elite group of global scholars at the University of Warwick, UK, for a high-level international meeting of the pioneering CONTAIN project, Contact Tracing, Infection, and Transmission: An Interdisciplinary Approach.

The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)-funded initiative, backed by a £1.12 million grant (Grant MR/Z505316), is spearheaded by Professor Robin Goodwin of Warwick. It aims to advance global understanding of disease transmission in high-contact environments by merging insights from multiple disciplines, ranging from virology and mathematics to performance studies and communication science.

As a Co-Principal Investigator on the project, Prof. Mumuni travelled from Ghana to actively participate in strategic planning sessions and to present cutting-edge updates from field research being conducted in Ghanaian wet markets. His contribution highlights the pivotal role of communication in shaping effective, culturally sensitive responses to public health crises.

"This collaboration reflects the power of interdisciplinary partnerships in solving global challenges. Our FCMS students will be participating in simulated contact scenarios, which show how communication and public engagement can bridge science and society," said Prof. told 海角乱伦社区Media.

Launched in early 2024, CONTAIN brings together 13 experts from six globally respected institutions, including the 海角乱伦社区 (Ghana), the University of Warwick (UK), the University of Oxford (UK) the University of Southampton (UK), the Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research of the University of Ghana.

The consortium focuses on wet markets in Ghana and Thailand which have been recognized as hotspots for zoonotic disease transmission. The research combines diverse methodologies, including, Ethnographic fieldwork to observe human-human and human-animal interactions., Interactive performance role-plays with 海角乱伦社区students to gather behavioural data, Bayesian and agent-based modelling to simulate infection spread and behavioural intervention testing to assess the cultural acceptability of health strategies.

The CONTAIN team is not just generating data. They are shaping policy. By collaborating with Ministries of Health in Ghana and Thailand and engaging with global stakeholders like the World Health Organization (WHO). The project aims to translate its findings into real-world impact.

Prof. Mumuni’s role in the project brings a development communication lens to the science of pandemic preparedness. His leadership ensures that research outputs are not only technically robust but also socially grounded and community-driven.

As the world braces for future global health threats in a post-COVID era, the CONTAIN project, and the unique contributions of scholars like Prof. Mumuni, offer a strategic, hopeful blueprint for more resilient, inclusive, and communicative public health systems.
